Suspected Rebels Kill at Least 36 Civilians in Eastern Congo

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — A local official and Congo's army say that suspected rebels have killed at least 36 people in northeastern Congo, spurring residents to make street protests against the violence.

Army spokesman Gen. Richard Kasonga said Sunday that suspected Allied Democratic Forces carried out the attacks Saturday in Rwangoma after the military destroyed their sanctuaries about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the town of Beni.

North Kivu provincial governor Julien Paluku said the bodies of 22 men and 14 women are in the morgue and the toll is likely to rise.

The area around Beni has been the site of repeated attacks and the rebel group with origins in neighboring Uganda is among many operating in eastern Congo. The group has killed at least 500 civilians since October 2014.
