UN Human Rights Chief Calls for Peacekeeper Accountability

Friday, 04 September 2015 09:05 AM

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — The U.N. human rights chief says there needs to be greater accountability for international peacekeepers following of yet another sexual abuse allegation in Central African Republic.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, addressed the scandal Friday following his visit to the country where thousands have died in sectarian fighting since late 2013.

Zeid said there's no excuse for "the failure to apply punishments that fit the crime."

U.N. peacekeepers and French soldiers tasked with trying to stabilize the country have both been accused of sexual abuses against the civilians they are supposed to be protecting.

The latest case to emerge involves a teenage girl who authorities say was sexually abused by a French soldier and later gave birth to his child.
