The Twitter account of the star witness in the George Zimmerman murder case was scrubbed Tuesday night of more than 50 embarrassing and incriminating tweets before taking the witness stand on Wednesday.
Rachel Jeantel is the 19-year-old Miami resident and friend of Trayvon Martin who claims that she was on the phone with Martin right before he was shot to death by Zimmerman in February 2012,
The Smoking Gun reports.
Her testimony is considered key in showing that Martin was being pursued by Zimmerman, who killed Martin with a single gunshot to the chest and claims he was acting in self-defense.
During her first day of testimony on Wednesday, defense lawyers sought to undermine her credibility.
Jeantel testified that Martin described the man following him as "a creepy-ass cracker," and admitted on the stand that she lied to Martin's parents about why she didn't attend her friend's funeral, The Associated Press reported.
Jeantel also maintained a Twitter account @MsRachel_94 where she made more than 200 posts in the last five months -- many referring to drinking, smoking, and getting high.
The Smoking Gun noticed Tuesday that 14 tweets had been removed from Jeantel's account -- with "references to drinking and a link to a sexually suggestive set of photos." Another missing tweet was from June 23, in which Jeantel linked a photo of her fingernails with orange nail polish, which read "Court nails."
By Tuesday night, another 43 tweets had been deleted -- about two hours after The Smoking Gun had posted its story on Jeantel's social media habits. The Smoking Gun noted that the number of Jeantel's tweets dropped from 202 to 146.
Many of the deleted tweets made references to Jeantel's underage drinking and getting high, such as, "When u drinking & smoking u need good music in ur ears hahaha I feel so good on Sunday."
A couple of the removed tweets referenced Robert Zimmerman Jr., who is the brother and outspoken spokesman for the Zimmerman family. He had to apologize for a couple of his own tweets recently.
Jeantel was caught lying twice: once, when she lied to Martin's mother about her age, and a second time, when she told investigators that she didn't attend Martin's funeral because she was sick and in the hospital. During cross-examination on Wednesday, Jeantel said the real reason she didn't attend the funeral was because she "didn't want to see the body."
