Pa. Lawmaker: Yuengling Snubbed at Gov.'s Inaugural as Anti-union

By    |   Friday, 16 January 2015 09:24 AM EST

Yuengling beer is been banned from Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s inauguration festivities as political payback for the brewery owner’s anti-union stance, state Rep. Mike Vereb told Philadelphia talk radio host Dom Giordano.

"There’s a bureaucrat in this transition team that does not like Dick Yuengling because of his stance that he took in defending Governor Corbett on right to work a few years back," said Vereb, a Republican.

"Yuengling employs Pennsylvanians. It’s America’s oldest brewery. It’s the economic driver in Pottsville, not to mention that whole region … He takes care of his employees. He’s not unionized, and frankly, neither is Tom Wolf’s cabinet company."

Vereb went on to say that "there is a specific restriction and request to not have Yuengling product there."

Wolf is a Democrat and Richard Yuengling Jr., the president of the brewery, is a Republican.

Yuengling Jr. has been a foe of unions since saying two years ago that the Keystone State would attract more business if it "endorsed policies that ban mandatory dues and membership at unionized businesses," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Following Yuengling’s remarks, the 1.3 million-member Teamsters union voted to boycott Yuengling products.

Pennsylvania’s largest employee unions are among the top donors contributing to Wolf’s $1.5 million inaugural gala, according to the Inquirer.

Included on that list are Comcast Corp. and Wolf’s family-owned business, both of whom contributed the $50,000 maximum.

Wolf representative Beth Melena said only that "we met our beverage needs, and we have a variety of choices for attendees from a number of breweries."

The inauguration is set for next week.
