Northeast Is Waking up to Snowy Morning Commute

Friday, 21 January 2011 08:07 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) — Snow in the Northeast is causing hazardous road conditions for the morning commute but is expected to taper off by midmorning south of New England.

There are no reports of problems at airports or on commuter trains, subways and buses, but transportation officials are advising commuters to give themselves extra time.

In New England, forecasters say the storm is expected to dump 5 to 8 inches of snow. National Weather Service meteorologist Benjamin Sipprell says the quick-moving storm is not expected to affect power lines and tree limbs as did the wet, heavy snow the region endured a week ago.

New York City is expected to get up to 6 inches of snow by the time it ends, at about 10 a.m.

In New Jersey, the precipitation is ending. Accumulations reached as much as 5 inches in the northwest part of the state.
