A Florida man who has claimed for years that William Shatner is his biological father has petitioned a court to have his last name changed, but the actor's attorneys are threatening him with legal action if he moves forward.

"They are trying to scare me," the man, Peter Sloan, 62, of Tampa, told The Tampa Bay Times. "It won't work."

Sloan says his mother, the late actress Kathy Burt, had a one-night stand in early 1956 in Toronto, Canada, after they'd been working together on Canadian television, and he was born on Dec. 9 of that year.

She gave him up for adoption in New York, but the two reconnected in 1984, when she admitted that his father could either be Shatner or another man she called "Chick," a law student from Montreal.

Shatner and Sloan met with each other in 1984, and Sloan said that Shatner admitted at that time that he was his father. However, he has not been able to convince Shatner, now 87, to take a DNA test.

Sloan already publicly calls himself Peter Shatner, and has authored a self-published memoir under that name, but now wants his name legally changed.

Shatner's attorney, John B. Atkinson, said Sloan has already stated publicly that the adoption agency handling his case had said his father was a law student, and pointed out that a defamation suit Sloan had filed against Shatner was dismissed on the grounds that it was never established that Shatner is his father.

Sloan said he's not trying to seek a piece of Shatner's fortune or to build a relationship with the Star Trek star, but he does want his identity recognized.
