Reports Nellie Ohr, a former contractor for Fusion GPS, the agency behind the Steele dossier on President Donald Trump, had also conducted opposition research during the 2016 campaign on his children and wife are "fairly standard" procedure, Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, said Thursday.
"I think a lot of this is not necessarily new," Hurd, a former CIA officer, told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime." "I think it's been very clear that the Steele dossier was known to be funded by campaign money, well in advance of their quest for the FISA request. And in that FISA request, there was circular reporting being used to act as if the Steele dossier had been confirmed, which it had not."
The Daily Caller reported Wednesday that Nellie Ohr, who is married to Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, told Congress last year that one of her tasks with Fusion was to research Trump's family.
"When I was in the CIA, I was an undercover officer for almost a decade," Hurd said. "I worked side-by-side with many folks within the FBI. These are folks that are doing everything they can to keep our country safe. But when you give great responsibility and authority to federal law enforcement you've got to make sure that they are being done in the right way."
And, if there is concern about how the duties are being executed, that should concern all Americans, Hurd said, and it is part of Congress' oversight to explore those things."
