Wikipedia Could Offer Tip to VP Pick

Wednesday, 08 August 2012 10:43 AM EDT

Those looking for a little advance notice on Mitt Romney’s vice presidential pick might want to check out the number of times the Wikipedia pages of possible nominees are updated. Four years ago the entries for the top contenders for both the Democratic and Republican VP slots received a series of changes in the 24 hours before the announcement, the website techpresident.com reported.

Sarah Palin's page had about 68 updates in the 24 hours before her pick by John McCain was announced and another 54 changes in the week before. Joe Biden’s page also received a flurry of updates. The pattern was first noticed four years ago by Cyveillance, an Internet monitoring company.

None of Wikipedia entries for the current candidates for the GOP vice presidential slot, including Rob Portman, Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie, Kelly Ayotte or Tim Pawlenty, are currently showing a spike, but four years ago most of the changes came in the 24 hours before the announcement, the website reported.

However, the website cautions that since the changes were noted four years ago, they may be avoided this time around to avoid giving anyone a tip off.
