More than 30 Facebook groups claiming to represent white student union groups in colleges and universities across the nation have popped up — and students and educators are concerned.
The schools affected include New York University, George Washington University, Penn State, Ohio State, Stanford, Swarthmore, the University of Mississippi and the University of Texas,
USA Today reports.
The pages contain such messages as, "We unapologetically provide a safe space for white students to air their true feelings about the future of our nation … at the same time, we do not wish to denigrate or harm any other group or ethnicity."
Exactly who is behind the controversial postings is unknown although one unconfirmed report says it could be the work of a white supremacy group.
No matter, students and school administrators are outraged and have issued statements condemning the alleged groups.
NYU says the Facebook page touting a white student union on its Greenwich Village campus is using the school's purple and white logo illegally and has demanded it be removed.
And the NYU student newspaper,
Washington Square News, said in an editorial:
"At a time when race relations continue to dominate conversations on campuses nationwide, the page is completely out of line and has no place at NYU..."
"This page does not represent the values of our university and its students and should be barred from affiliating itself with NYU. The university must come out against white supremacy and moronic white pride."
A spokesperson for Facebook told USA Today it has deleted some of the "white student union" pages which were created with fake Facebook accounts.
