Weiner Mocks Pelosi's Picks for Benghazi Panel

Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:22 AM EDT

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner has criticized House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic choices for the Select Committee on Benghazi.

In a Twitter message, Weiner said that he was "not crazy" about the five Democrats she picked for the investigation into the attacks on the U.S. mission in Libya that killed four Americans in September 2012.

Weiner, who served in Congress from 1999 to 2011 until he quit over a body-baring sexting scandal, said it was like "going into a knife fight carrying library books."

Pelosi selected Reps. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, Adam Smith of Washington, Adam Schiff of California, Linda Sanchez of California, and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, for the panel, which will have seven Republicans.

Smith is the ranking Democratic member of the House Armed Services Committee and Schiff serves on the appropriations panel overseeing the State Department budget, The Hill reported.

Sanchez is a member of the House Ways and Means subcommittee on Oversight while Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran, also serves on the Oversight committee.

Weiner, who ran last year unsuccessfully for New York mayor, did not explain in the tweet what he thought was wrong with the Democratic choices.

The select committee has been slammed by Democrats who claim that it’s purely a witch hunt aimed at damaging President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is a potential presidential contender.

Republicans say the committee, headed by South Carolina Republican Trey Gowdy, was empaneled to determine what went wrong on the day of the attacks by Islamic militants.
