Activists Rally in DC to Mark Iraq War Anniversary

Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:50 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Several hundred anti-war demonstrators are protesting in a park near the White House to mark the eighth anniversary of the Iraq war.

The protesters carried signs Saturday demanding troops be withdrawn from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Others supported Bradley Manning, the Army private suspected of leaking classified documents to Wikileaks. He is being held at a military prison in Virginia.

Similar protests marking the start of the Iraq war are also planned Saturday in Chicago, San Francisco and other cities. On Sunday, a protest will be held outside the brig where Manning is being held in Quantico, Va.

Among the protesters was 64-year-old Paul Markin of Lynn, Mass. He says he is a retired Army corporal who served in Vietnam and has opposed war ever since.
