Democrats have drawn a lot of attention in recent weeks with their claim that Republicans are conducting a war against women, but anti-abortion groups are turning that message around.
They say that Democrats who oppose legislation to ban sex-selective abortions are the ones waging the war on women,
The Hill reports.
The House is scheduled to vote on a bill Thursday that would fine or incarcerate doctors who perform abortions on women whose decision stems at least in part from the fetus' gender. The bill also requires medical professionals to inform law enforcement officials if they suspect an abortion has transpired under those circumstances.
Americans United for Life (AUL) sent a letter to House members Wednesday urging them to "stop a real war on women — sex-selection abortions" by voting for the bill sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. "There is nothing pro-woman about killing a baby girl because she is female and putting her mother’s health and safety at risk in the process," read the letter written by AUL President Charmaine Yoest.
Many Republicans in Congress agree. "This is the ultimate war on women," New York Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle said on the House Floor. "There can be no rights for women if we do not allow them the right to life."
AUL spokeswoman Kristi Hamrick said anti-abortion advocates are trying to supplant the Democratic, pro-abortion views that have dominated the media debate. "What we're trying to do is hold the left accountable for its own rhetoric," she told The Hill. "The 'war-on-women' language begs the question: in a war, who is dying? Sex-selective abortion kills unborn women."
