Sixty-three percent of American voters either strongly or somewhat agree with the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to oversee the Russia probe, a Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.

Other highlights from the survey:

  • 21 percent disagree with appointment of special counsel.
  • 46 percent of all those polled said Congress should not begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, while 38 percent say it should.
  • 43 percent say Trump is being treated fairly by the news media, while 42 percent say he is not.
  • 45 percent approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 50 percent disapprove.
  • 56 percent call Trump’s sharing highly classified national security information with Russian officials "inappropriate," while 19 percent say the disclosure was "appropriate."

"Our latest polling finds that Americans are not only divided in how to react to the latest news out of Washington, they're divided over what the news is," said Morning Consult Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp. "For example, 76 percent of Democrats think President Trump fired FBI Director Comey to hinder the Russia investigation, while just 17% of Republicans agree."

Here is how the rest of the poll breaks down:

  • 36 percent of those polled see Russia as an ally or friendly nation, while 48 percent say it is either unfriendly or an enemy of the United States.
  • 48 percent express confidence in Trump’s ability to keep the U.S. safe from terrorism, while 47 percent were not confident.
  • 40 percent say building a wall along the Mexican border should be a priority, while 17 percent it is not an important priority sand 38 percent say it should not be done.

The poll surveyed 1,938 registered voters from May 18-22 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
