President Donald Trump is complaining White House officials — including National Security Adviser John Bolton — underestimated embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after a bid to replace him with Juan Guaidó has thus far come up short.
According to The Washington Post, Trump is growing frustrated with his team as Maduro continues to hold onto the presidency, despite several western countries recognizing the 35-year-old Guaidó as the nation's acting president.
A senior administration official said Trump has quipped Bolton wants to put Trump "into a war" in Venezuela. The comment was believed to have been made in a joking manner at first, but it is being taken more seriously now.
Guaidó tried to lead a military takeover of the country last week, which resulted in protests and riots in the capital of Caracas. Maduro nearly fled to Cuba but was talked out of doing so by Russia, which supports his regime and has soldiers on the ground there.
Trump is also upset Bolton's policy toward Venezuela is too interventionist, as Trump is more on the side of not getting involved in other countries' problems, the Post reported.
