Senate Passes Bill for US Women's History Museum

Friday, 12 Dec 2014 07:01 PM

An effort to create a National Women's History Museum is heading to President Barack Obama's desk following Senate passage of the measure 16 years after it was first introduced.

The legislation for a women's history museum will establish a privately funded commission to study and report how a museum could be created and maintained in Washington.

Supporters say women's history is often left out of history books, national parks and landmarks.

The bill passed Friday as part of a package of natural-resources measures that were added to a large defense-policy package. The House voted in May to create a bipartisan commission.

An eight-member panel will be appointed by congressional leaders. The commission will have 18 months to produce a report for Congress to consider.
