Venezuelan First Lady's Nephews Plead Not Guilty in NYC

Thursday, 17 Dec 2015 01:59 PM

Two nephews of Venezuela's powerful first lady have pleaded not guilty in a New York courtroom to U.S. cocaine-smuggling charges.

The pleas were entered Thursday before Judge Paul Crotty in Manhattan federal court.

Francisco Flores and Efrain Campo were arrested last month in Haiti and brought to the United States. They are the nephews of Venezuelan first lady Cilia Flores. Both are held without bail.

A lawyer for 30-year-old Flores declined to comment.

A lawyer for 29-year-old Campo said outside court that his client was nervous and terrified at facing very serious drug charges that could result in a significant amount of time in prison.

The next hearing in the case was set for Feb. 29.
