An employee of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Arizona has died after being shot in the driveway of his home on Thursday, authorities said.
The worker was shot while apparently getting ready to go to work at about 4 a.m., Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said. No one was in custody.
The employee's name was not released.
Crump declined to say whether the employee is a deputy or a jail detention officer or if the person holds another position. Sheriff's Officer Chris Hegstrom referred inquiries to Phoenix police.
Another sheriff's spokesman, Sgt. Brandon Jones, also declined to specify the worker's job but said Sheriff Joe Arpaio would hold a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Crump said a male was seen running from the scene as neighbors heard shots fired and discovered the critically wounded victim on the driveway.
Police set up a perimeter around several blocks near the home before lifting it about two hours later after a police dog and tactical teams conducted a search.
Crump said several people were questioned but not arrested.
Television footage of the area showed numerous law enforcement vehicles on the street where the shooting occurred, including large vans.
A pickup truck was seen in the victim's driveway. Its hood was up.
The shooting occurred in a Phoenix neighborhood that uses a Tolleson address.
