US Newspapers Call for Gun Control After Florida School Shooting

Major newspapers in the U.S. ramped up calls for gun control in the wake of Wednesday’s Parkland, Florida school shooting.

The New York Post’s front page on Thursday urged President Donald Trump to "please act."

The Post, which is owned by Fox News CEO Rupert Murdoch, addressed President Donald Trump Thursday. "You need to get behind some steps that can help rein in these endless nightmares," the paper’s editorial board wrote.

The Post’s board also called for a reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban, and for increasing the age at which people can buy weapons.

"It’s time to ban these weapons of war," The Washington Post’s editorial board wrote.

"We can say with tragic certitude it (the Florida shooting) won’t be the last needless loss of life resulting from the wash of guns in this country and the refusal of national lawmakers to tighten controls over who can buy a gun and what kinds of weapons may be owned," the Washington Post board added.

Gun control is an "act of common sense," The New York Times editorial board wrote.
"Candidates must realize that reducing gun violence is a winning and moral issue… Standing up to gun rights extremists and industry lobbyists can no longer be seen as an act of heroism that can lead to political suicide. It is an act of common sense that would bring our government under the control of its citizens," The Times board wrote.

USA Today said that a ban on "high muzzle velocity" weapons is a necessity. “The Second Amendment guarantees a constitutional right to bear arms, but it does not preclude reasonable regulation of the most destructive weapons, according to the Supreme Court’s Heller decision, written by the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia," the USA Today editorial board wrote.
