Texas Soldier's Death Investigated; Ebola Test a Precaution

Tuesday, 13 Jan 2015 06:07 PM

Officials say they're investigating the death of a Fort Hood soldier who was found outside an off-base apartment after he returned from deployment in West Africa. An Ebola test was given as a precaution.

Fort Hood spokesman Chris Haug says test results on the 24-year-old soldier are expected Tuesday. His body was found Tuesday morning, and a hazardous-materials crew assisted at the scene.

Texas Department of State Health Services spokeswoman Carrie Williams described the matter as "very low risk."

Haug says the soldier returned with his unit last week from Liberia, where he helped construct an Ebola treatment camp. Haug says he wasn't exposed to patients and there's no indication he had the disease.

Fort Hood says he was monitoring his health and allowed to leave base after his return.
