7th Suspect Charged in Border Agent's Slaying

Thursday, 07 August 2014 05:08 PM EDT

A seventh suspect in the 2010 killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent has been charged in the slaying that is at the center of a scandal over a botched U.S. gun-smuggling probe known as Operation Fast and Furious.

Federal prosecutors say 30-year-old Rosario Rafael Burboa Alvarez will appear in federal court Thursday in Tucson, Arizona, to face charges of first-degree murder and other crimes. He is already in custody for immigration-related crimes.

Prosecutors say he assembled an armed crew to steal marijuana from smugglers. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry died in an encounter with the crew in a rural area near Nogales.

Burboa Alvarez was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury. Court records do not list an attorney for him.
