More than a dozen companies have announced they will either cancel or suspend their advertising from Fox News' Tucker Carlson following the controversial comments he made about immigrants seeking to enter the United States, CNN reported on Wednesday.

The large number of advertisers abandoning Carlson’s program came as liberal activists pressured firms to leave the show.

Last Thursday, Carlson said on his program that the U.S. should distinguish immigrants based on their educational background, according to Business Insider.

He urged the admittance of more "scientists and engineers," while suggesting that allowing in immigrants from impoverished regions of the world would make the U.S. "poorer and dirtier."

After an initial backlash in which three advertisers said they would pull their commercials, Carlson defended his comments on Monday, arguing that "huge swaths of the [border with Mexico] are covered with garbage and waste" left behind by immigrants "that degrade the soil and kill wildlife."

He added that "the left" wants him to "shut up," but that he would refuse to do so, because he was "not intimidated."

Fox News Channel backed Carlson, stating it was a "shame that left-wing advocacy groups, under the guise of being supposed 'media watchdogs,' weaponize social media against companies in an effort to stifle free speech."

Fox News added: "While we do not advocate boycotts, these same groups never target other broadcasters and operate under a grossly hypocritical double standard given their intolerance to all opposing points of view."
