The Transportation Security Administration reported an uptick in the number of guns it found per passenger last month despite a sharp decline in the number of travelers, CNN reports.

On Monday, TSA reported it found more than 300 guns in carry-on baggage in July, which equates to about 15.3 guns per million people screened. Last month’s total is up from the rate of 5.1 guns per million found in July 2019, even though the number of people flying is down 75%. The number of weapons found in carry-on luggage was up three times the amount found during the same time period last year.

According to TSA, 80% of the weapons it found at security checkpoints were loaded. TSA employees at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport found 27 guns last month.

The agency’s logged numbers do not include weapons that were properly packed in checked luggage, according to CNN.

Last year, TSA officers found more guns than in any previous year. In 2019, TSA reported finding 4,432 guns at security checkpoints, which was a 5% increase over the number of guns found in 2018.

"Travelers must understand that firearms are prohibited items at airports and in the passenger cabins of aircraft," TSA administrator David Pekoske said in a statement. "As hard as we are working to mitigate other risks at this time, no one should be introducing new ones."

People who are caught transporting a firearm improperly through an airport face a fine starting at $2,050 for an unloaded weapon and $4,100 for a loaded firearm, according to CNN.

If a traveler found with a weapon is enrolled in a trusted traveler membership, like TSA PreCheck, the agency said the person’s membership is suspended.

According to CNN, TSA screened nearly 832,000 people on Sunday, which marked the first time it screened more than 800,000 people in a day since the coronavirus outbreak hindered travel in mid-April.
