President Trump tweeted Sunday that the acquittal of an illegal immigrant charged with murder in the 2015 shooting death of Kate Steinle was a "total miscarriage of justice."

On Thursday, a San Francisco just acquitted Jose Ines Garcia Zarate of murder and manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Steinle, 32.

Zarate already had been deported five times at the time of the shooting. Trump and other Republicans used the case as a rallying cry for tougher immigration laws during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Zarate was found not guilty of first- or second-degree murder or assault with a firearm. The jury was seemingly convinced of testimony that the gun had misfired while Zarate was handling it and that the bullet ricocheted before it hit Steinle.

Last week, a federal warrant was issued for his arrest. The San Francisco court did convict him of being a felon with a firearm. He is awaiting sentencing on that charge.

President Trump previously called the verdict in the case "disgraceful."

"No wonder the people of our Country are so angry with Illegal Immigration," Trump tweeted last week.
