The Trump administration is cracking down on leakers by planting information to see if it gets out to reporters, reports Axios.

President Donald Trump’s chief of staff "[Mark] Meadows told me he was doing that," one former White House official told the news outlet. "I don't know if it ever worked."

Politico last week reported that the Trump administration opened an internal investigation to try to uncover who leaked intelligence about Russians paying the Taliban to kill American soldiers following a New York Times report titled, "Russia Secretly Offered Afghan Militants Bounties to Kill U.S. Troops, Intelligence Says."

Trump, according to Politico, seems to be more worked up about the Russia leak considering the highly classified information, though he has always been upset about staffers leaking material.

"Leaks drive presidents crazy," Chris Whipple, the presidential historian who wrote about White House chiefs of staff, told Axios. "They always have and they always will. But one thing that effective chiefs of staff figure out is that the way you prevent leaks is not by tapping people's phones or threatening to ruin them."
