Trump: Detroit 'Total Mess,' More Cities to Follow

By    |   Monday, 22 July 2013 12:19 PM EDT

Donald Trump spared no words about Detroit's filing for bankruptcy, calling the city a "total mess" and a "smaller image of what the country is."

"Detroit has been mis-run or mismanaged for many, many, years. This country is being mismanaged," Trump said Monday on "Fox & Friends."

"It's an impossible slope because if you bail out Detroit, you're going to be bailing out every city. This is just something that it's going to be a natural progression. Things will probably happen, but it's going to be a rough time," the businessman said.

Seeing Detroit as foreshadowing what could lay ahead for other struggling cities, Trump pointed to the gravity of Detroit's bankruptcy.

"The bigger problem is, how many cities do we have like Detroit? The answer is many. You have many cities like Detroit. I'm not going to mention names, but you have major cities," Trump said.

"You have big, big, cities, a lot bigger than Detroit, that are in not such a different position."

Trump pointed to the primary reason for the city's problems as a failure in leadership, saying, "It is pure incompetence. In many cases guys — people running for office — want to pander to the unions and pander to everybody else, and they don't want to negotiate because they're afraid they'll lose votes, and they don't do the right thing."
