Former Rep. Trey Radel said a dispute with another congressman over sheep shearing led to the end of his political career, not being busted for soliciting cocaine from an undercover FBI agent.

In November 2013, Radel was charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession, according to PoliticoThe congressman allegedly bought cocaine from a dealer who had been arrested in a federal probe, and the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration were involved in the charges.

The Florida Republican told "Candidate Confessional" podcast on Thursday that months before his cocaine arrest, he pushed an amendment to cut a $50 million appropriation that taught people about sheep shearing.

"We found this insane example buried deep within the farm bill that appropriated — let me be very clear here, five-zero, $50 million to teach people how to shear sheep," Radel said, calling the funding "nonsensical."

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, head of the House Ethics Committee blasted Radel on the House floor, saying he thought sheep shearing was "beneath" him. However, the amendment passed.

Then-Speaker of the House John Boehner asked Radel to announce that he would not be seeking re-election.

Radel said he hoped that the controversy about his arrest would blow over — then a House Ethics Committee asked him for the names of everyone he had done drugs with.

"The only guy ever that I had ever pissed off… but of course it was Mike Conaway," Radel said.

"I called my attorney and said, 'I'm done. I'm out, and that was it," Radel told the podcast.

He resigned in January 2014 and is now a media trainer, who works in personal branding and crisis management.
