Former GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., will help represent President Donald Trump in his impeachment proceedings, CNN reports.

Gowdy retired from Congress ahead of the 2018 midterm elections to continue his career as an attorney. He is also a regular Fox News contributor.

He will not join the White House administration and instead assist as outside counsel. Gowdy met with White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney Tuesday about his role.

The news comes as Trump and his administration informed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., of their refusal to participate in the "illegitimate and unconstitutional" impeachment inquiry.

"President Trump and his administration reject your baseless, unconstitutional efforts to overturn the democratic process," the letter, written by White House counsel Pat Cipollone, says. "Your unprecedented actions have left the president with no choice. In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the Executive Branch, and all future occupants of the Office of the Presidency, President Trump and his administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances."

Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani also said Tuesday he would not cooperate with the House of Representatives' impeachment probe.
