Social-media sites took off Tuesday after a conservative commentator's tweet describing President Barack Obama as "Grown-Up Trayvon," according to Politico.

Dinesh D'Souza ignited the outrage by tweeting, "I am thankful this week when I remember that America is big enough and great enough to survive Grown-Up Trayvon in the White House!"

The tweet later was deleted from D'Souza's Twitter account, according to The Huffington Post, which published a screenshot.

D'Souza was referring to Trayvon Martin, the Florida teenager shot and killed by George Zimmerman in 2012. Zimmerman, who pleaded self-defense, was acquitted by a jury earlier this year.

USA Today reported
reactions to D'Souza's Tweet included "disgusting" and "vile." One tweet asked: "So is D'Souza's point that Obama should be shot?"

Other reactions included "idiotic" and "pathetic," "
outrageously racist,"  and yet another tweet called on the Secret Service to pay D'Souza a visit.

The president had publicly identified himself with Martin saying, "You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago."

D'Souza responded to the rebukes with a follow-up tweet: "Feigned outrage on the left over me calling Obama 'grown up Trayvon' except that Obama likened himself to Trayvon!"

D'Souza no stranger to controversy spearheaded a documentary last year titled "2016: Obama's America," which criticized the president and his policies and which at least one critic called a character assassination.

In a posting on his website
, D'Souza said he believes Obama has sought to undermine American exceptionalism and "take us down a notch."
