Pew Research Center: Americans Love Trade but Differ on Tariffs

By    |   Sunday, 09 December 2018 11:07 AM

Americans love trade, and Republicans have even gotten on board after some years of skepticism, according to the Pew Research Center.

An overwhelming majority of Republicans (81 percent) now believe trade is good for the United States, a steady rise from when former President Barack Obama was elected, while Democrats agree at a steady level of 71 percent, NBC's "Meet the Press" reported from the Pew poll.

The issue on tariffs has flipped, too, but now gives a divergent view between the parties. Democrats, long supporting tariffs are now free traders, while Republicans are overwhelmingly supportive of President Trump's use of tariffs as leverage in trade talks.

Pew Research Center's polling on support for tariffs, per the report:

  • 74 percent of Republicans see tariffs as good for the U.S.
  • 81 percent of Democrats see tariffs as bad for the U.S.

"The point here is even with a large amount of agreement on 'trade' there are still big disagreements on trade policy and Trump's approach to it," NBC News' Dante Chinni and Sally Bronston wrote. "And, in a larger sense, these numbers offer yet another sign of how the president seems to be changing the two parties.

"The Pew data suggest that the Democrats, the party that once favored protectionist trade policies, have become 'free traders.' Meanwhile, Republicans who one cherished the label 'free trader' are more interested in tariffs aimed at bringing better deals with foreign countries – what detractors call protectionism.

"Go back a few years in American politics and those positions would have been shocking. In 2018, they are simply par for the course."
