Rep. Tom Emmer to Newsmax TV: Time to Open Up Minnesota

(Newsmax TV's "The Chris Salcedo Show")

Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., went after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's approach to handling the COVID-19 pandemic, insisting more money from the federal government is not the answer.

"Spending fatigue has set in," Emmer told Newsmax TV's "The Chris Salcedo Show," adding Gov. Walz needs to "face reality."

"The best thing you can do to help state, county, and local governments is to reopen your state," Emmer said.

Gov. Walz has a shutdown order in effect until May 3, but Rep. Emmer said, "Shutting down the economy has been so devastating in my district. We're going to lose restaurants. We're going to lose car dealerships. We are going to lose all kinds of businesses, and there is really no reason to lose them."

Emmer, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman, said Gov. Walz, a member of the Democratic-Farmers-Labor Party, opened a recent conference call saying $500 billion is needed for state and local governments, but Emmer believes it is unlikely such a sum could be forthcoming.

"Reliance on data so far has been overwhelmingly focused on health aspects of this crisis," he said. "We are overdue for a shift to analyze the economic aspects. For every life that you're going to prolong or save, if you want to call it that, from this nasty virus, if you're losing a life to suicide, to addiction, to domestic abuse, that's not going to be a good outcome.

"You've got to look at the big picture. We have to have an economy going forward if it's going to support what people expect."

Rep. Emmer expressed thanks to President Donald Trump for signing an executive order designating pork producing plants as critical infrastructure, "because it is necessary for our food supply, which is ultimately necessary for our national defense."

"The solutions that we were being given from state of Minnesota is that we are going to have to euthanize up to 160,000 hogs across the nation daily, that would have been 70-100,000 in Minnesota alone. That is not a solution."

He expressed confidence, for the people in his district, "They're going to come out of this. They are going to be better. They are going to grow again."
