The head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday criticized President Donald Trump for his conduct last week surrounding the attack on the Capitol.
While discussing Wednesday's insurrection, U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas Donohue said Trump's actions were unacceptable and inexcusable, per The Hill.
"By his words and actions, he has undermined our democratic institutions and ideals," Donahue said during a press conference.
Donahue, whose organization endorsed Joe Biden for president before November's election, said he trusted Vice President Mike Pence, Trump's Cabinet, and Congress to decide on what should be done following the riot at the Capitol.
The Capitol violence occurred while a joint session of Congress met to certify the Electoral College voting results. Demonstrators who attacked the building were protesting the presidential election results.
President Trump has alleged Biden prevailed in the election due to voter fraud in several key battleground states.
Republican lawmakers objected to electoral results in Arizona and Pennsylvania both before and after the attack on the Capitol. Five people died as a result of the riot.
"It is for the vice president, the Cabinet, and Congress to decide whether or not to invoke the 25th Amendment or pursue impeachment or other measures," said Donahue, referring to the amendment that allows for the removal of the president.
"We trust them to use those tools judiciously, if needed, to ensure our nation's well-being and security."
