Texas Lt. Gov.: Mexican Government Helping Illegals

Mexican officials are abetting the illegal migration of thousands of minors into the United States, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said. 

Speaking on Monday's "Sean Hannity Show," Dewhurst said, "Kids that are six-years old, 10-years old, can't make it 1,600 miles from Honduras and Guatemala by themselves. ...The cartels, and I'm convinced unfortunately, some in the Mexican government, are helping them get into Texas. There's no way they could make it that far."

Dewhurst said that Texas has also been dealing with a "tsunami" of Chinese migrants as well as those from the Mideast who are coming over the border, and that all told around 1,000 to 1,200 illegals cross into Texas each day.

Mexico has a history of encouraging illegal migration to the United States. In 2005, Mexican authorities put out a brochure for migrants explaining how best to illegally enter the United States without being detected, The New York Times reported at the time.

Meanwhile, the leaders of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador said aid was needed to stem the flow of their nationals to the United States.

The president of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina, blamed the migration flow on the United States, saying his country's economic troubles resulted from the Cold War.

"We lived 36 years of internal armed conflict between capitalism and communism. In Guatemala we were neither capitalists nor communists, but we lived 36 years in which many died," The Washington Post reported. He requested $2 billion in aid to his and other Central American countries so they can "attack the root of the problem."

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said the demand for drugs in the United States had destabilized his country. "If you look at the root of the problem, you'll realize that your country has enormous responsibility for this," the Post reported.

And Salvador Sánchez Cerén, the president of El Salvador, is awaiting $277 million in economic assistance for his country, Politico reported.

Following a recent fact-finding trip, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-California, wrote that Mexico is now actually more aggressive in deporting Central American migrants than the United States itself.
