Texas Legislators Consider Special Session on Border Crisis

By    |   Monday, 16 Jun 2014 08:59 PM

Republican Texas state lawmakers are pushing for a special legislative session to deal with an unprecedented influx of undocumented immigrants on their southern border, reports said Monday.

Republican State Rep. Jonathan Stickland told the Texas Tribune the effort coincides with a separate online petition urging Gov. Rick Perry to address the issue, including with stepped-up state-run border security.

"I know there are a lot of legislators talking with each other, figuring out what we need to do," Stickland told the newspaper.

The governor's office told the Tribune that Perry has been concerned about the increase in unaccompanied children crossing the border since 2012, and that the Obama administration still doesn't have a "handle on the problem."

Perry spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said the governor has taken the issue of a special session "into consideration."

The Tribune noted that state Attorney General Greg Abbott, a GOP gubernatorial candidate, asked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson for $30 million for a state-based border security initiative, noting the Border Patrol was overwhelmed by the influx of an estimated undocumented immigrants who've crossed into Texas since last October.

Breitbart reported the online petition was triggered by a Facebook conversation but now includes officials working with the Texas Department of Public Safety to figure out the cost of a state-run border security operation.

The petition states, "We, the undersigned, because the federal government has failed to act, call on the Texas Legislature to develop and fund a border and port of entry security plan utilizing state and local law enforcement."

"If a special session of the legislature is required, I fully support the governor taking this action," state Rep. Rick Miller told Breitbart. "We must fund the requirements . . . to do what we can here in Texas to secure the border if the federal government is not going to act."
