Houston Democratic Mayor Sylvester Turner on Monday called for a two-week shutdown "at the minimum" to curb recent coronavirus threat surging through Texas.

The mayor tweeted he urged GOP Gov. Greg Abbott to shut down the state to "help blunt" the recent spread within the state.

Turner tweeted:

"If we can not have a shut down, then at least step back to state's Phase 1. This will allow us to reset and reassess."

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo joined Turner in calling for another stay-at-home order.

Hidalgo tweeted:

"Not only do we need a stay home order now, but we need to stick with it this time until the hospitalization curve comes down, not just flattens. Many communities that persevered in that way are reopening for the long haul. Let's learn from that & not make the same mistake twice."

Texas has turned into a coronavirus hotspot, as Harris County has recorded more cases than any other in the state with 47,369 confirmed cases. That included 466 deaths from the virus.

The state has a total of 264,313 confirmed cases and 3,235 deaths, according to state health department data.

Texas has 264,313 confirmed cases and 3,235 deaths, according to state data. The Lone Star State on Thursday broke a record single-day increase in new cases, with 10,909, and surpassed 10,000 hospitalizations the same week.

The governor has answered the coronavirus spike by mandating face coverings in public, closing bars and decreasing restaurant capacity.

Abbott announced Sunday that the federal government will continue to fund coronavirus testing sites in Dallas and Houston following the Trump administration's initial plan to stop giving the state money drew criticism.
