President Donald Trump is insisting that the reason why the United States has more coronavirus cases is because the country has "more advanced" testing capabilities.

Trump made the argument in a tweet late Sunday night.

"Our Coronavirus testing is so much greater (25 million tests) and so much more advanced, that it makes us look like we have more cases, especially proportionally, than other countries. My message on that is very clear!" he said.

During his rally Saturday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Trump told the crowd that he directed health officials to slow down the rate of testing as the COVID-19 numbers continue to climb.

"When you do testing to that extent, you're going to ... find more cases," he said. "So, I said to my people, 'Slow the testing down, please.'"

A White House official told The Associated Press that Trump was "obviously kidding."

The U.S. has seen more than 2.3 million COVID-19 cases and upward of 122,000 deaths associated with the disease. Friday and Saturday saw more than 33,000 new cases each day, the most since May 1.
