Tea Party Patriots Co-founder Says Ryan to Be Applauded for Budget Plan

By    |   Tuesday, 14 August 2012 08:17 PM

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is to be applauded for actually laying out a plan to balance the federal budget and telling the truth about the problems facing America, Jenny Beth Martin, one of the co-founders of the grass-roots group Tea Party Patriots, tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.

Martin noted that the Tea Party Patriots do not endorse candidates but will be focusing on Ryan's plan to balance the budget.

“What we’re going to be talking about is his plan and the fact that he has actually laid out a plan to balance the budget,” she said. “And Tea Party Patriots, we want a more aggressive plan, but we applaud the fact that he has come out with a plan and addresses the problem head on. We have to have elected officials who are willing to tell the truth and come up with solutions to the problems facing our country.”

Martin also was keen to avoid a dustup with Catholic groups, including nuns, who have been critical of Rep. Ryan’s plans to balance the budget, charging it places too big a burden on the poor and the middle class.

“Well, I don’t know how you win a debate specifically with a nun,” she said, “but I do know one thing: if we don’t address the deficit spending in the spending where over 40 cents out of every single dollar spent is borrowed money, if we don’t address that, our entire economy is going to go bankrupt.

“And that’s not good for the poor, the middle class or the wealthy. We have got to address it because it’s the right thing to do for all Americans.”

Martin said the Tea Party Patriots would like to see the federal budget balanced within five years without raising taxes and noted studies have shown it can be done.

“We’ve yet to see any spending cuts happen at all, and we know at Tea Party Patriots it’s going to be up to us to convince our fellow voters that spending cuts in the federal government must happen for the good of our country,” she added. “And so that’s what we’re going to focus on, and we can’t just rely on elected officials. They need the mandate from us to make the change happen.”

Martin said that despite talk that Romney might pick a woman to round out the GOP ticket, his choice of Ryan will not hurt him with female voters.

“I think that women are intelligent enough in this country to realize that there are real problems facing the country, and we need people who can provide solutions to those problems,” she said. “And I think that most women are willing to look past gender and look towards a solution. That’s certainly what I’m willing to do, and I think that the solutions provided and what the solutions are, are far more important that what the race or the gender is of the person providing solutions.”
