Half of American voters are against tariffs on steel and aluminum, a Quinnipiac University poll reported Tuesday.

In the poll:

  • 50 percent oppose tariffs, while 31 percent support them.
  • 64 percent say that a trade war would not benefit the U.S., while 28 percent agree with President Donald Trump that a trade war would be good for the U.S.
  • 59 percent of voters oppose the tariffs if it increases the prices of goods that they buy, while 29 percent support the tariffs if they increase prices.
  • 29 percent say the tariffs would be good for American jobs, while 36 percent said they would be bad for jobs, and 24 percent said they would have no effect.
  • 54 percent of voters disapprove of the way Trump is handling trade.
  • 34 percent favor the president’s actions on trade.

Breaking down the results by party, gender, education, age, and racial group, every group opposes steel and aluminum tariffs, except for Republicans and white voters who do not have college degrees, the poll report said.

  • 58 percent of Republicans support tariffs, while 20 percent do not.
  • 42 percent of white voters with no college degree support tariffs and 40 percent do not.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,122 voters around the U.S., with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, the report said.

Trump said Monday he would not back down on the plan to impose tariffs.
