Americans have broad exposure to guns, but adults aged 18 to 29 are more likely to purchase them for sport shooting, according to a new survey.

"Older people are saying they want guns for protection, but 18 to 29-year-olds are saying they're more into going shooting at a gun range," said Kim Parker, director of social trends research at Pew Research Center. "They're also more likely to listen to gun-oriented podcasts and shows, more likely to participate in online forums, and generally more likely to integrate technology in gun culture."

The survey, titled "America's Complex Relationship with Guns," was conducted March 13-27 and April 4-18 of this year.

Among the findings:

  • 67 percent of gun owners say protection is a major reason they own a gun.
  • 48 percent of white men say they own a gun compared with 24 percent of white women and nonwhite men.
  • 46 percent of Americans who live in rural parts of the country own guns compared with 28 percent of those who live in the suburbs.
  • 27 percent of people aged 18 to 29 own a gun.
