Supreme Court to Cut Costs to Fight Deficit

Friday, 31 December 2010 06:45 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) —

Chief Justice John Roberts says the federal judiciary will join Congress and the president next year in cutting costs to reduce the federal deficit.

Roberts, in his year-end report, said he has asked Supreme Court personnel to cut unnecessary expenses. Their efforts will allow the court to request less money in next year's budget.

Roberts says not many other federal government entities can say that.

Roberts also called on the Senate to find a long-term solution to selecting and confirming federal judges.

There are more than 90 judicial vacancies in U.S. district and appellate courts. But only 60 nominees have been confirmed by the Senate for U.S. appellate and district courts in the last two years. Another 19 did not get a vote.
