About $175,000 is being spent on a federally-funded study that involves taking photos of food before obese people eat it, The Washington Free Beacon is reporting.

The study comes from the National Science Foundation and is being overseen by Perdue University, according to the Free Beacon.

"The project will use images from the food environment to address the fundamental question of where, how, and when food should be consumed to maximize health and prevent disease," the federal grant for the study said.

"Monitoring the personal dietary environment and determination of environmental patterns related to dietary intake can empower both healthcare providers and patients to optimize evidence-based decisions.

"This information can help individuals recognize less healthful behaviors that may be occurring in their lives," the grant said.

The study, "Using Digital Images to Connect Eating Environment with Dietary Quality," began in April and is scheduled to end March 31, 2018.

"The results may also be used to help guide the development of programs to reduce the prevalence of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases in the U.S. population and advise U.S. dietary policy," according to the grant.
