Three students shot dead in last week's Florida high school massacre are being posthumously awarded medals for heroism by the U.S. Army.
Peter Wang, 15, Martin Duque, 14, and Alaina Petty, 14 — who were cadets in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program (JROTC) at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — will receive the award.
The Army said it bestows the award on those who perform an act of heroism that "involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage."
The three, along with 14 others, were killed last Wednesday — allegedly by Nikolas Cruz, a fellow JROTC member.
Duque's family will be presented with his medal during a service on Saturday, while Wang's family was due to receive his medal at his service Tuesday. Petty's family was given her medal at her funeral service Monday.
Wang, who was shot repeatedly, "died a gentleman holding the door for other students" to escape, his classmate Kelsey Friend told CNN.
An Army spokesperson said Wang's family requested the 15-year-old student be buried in his JROTC uniform, which will include the Medal of Heroism.
The Army says the JROTC is designed to provide "a quality citizenship, character, and leadership development program, while fostering partnerships with communities and educational institutions."
The Army is reviewing additional medals for other JROTC cadets.
