New York University is under fire for serving a racially-insensitive student lunch for Black History Month — including ribs, collard greens, and watermelon-flavored water.

"Not only was this racially insensitive, this was just ignorant. In 2018, there’s no excuse for intentional and deliberate disrespect," said sophomore Nia Harris, an African American student, said in a Facebook post.

"This school prides itself on being diverse and inclusive and global yet we have to deal with things like this that contradicts what the school is about."

On Tuesday, NYU served a special lunch in honor of Black History Month at its Weinstein Hall dormitory in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village that students say enforced racist stereotypes of black people.

The meal included red Kool-Aid and watermelon-flavored water, barbecued ribs, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and cornbread, according to Harris, who is enrolled in NYU’s College of Arts & Science.

"I've wanted to go to NYU since I was 7th grade, and it breaks my heart …" she said.

Harris, whose Facebook post received more than 900 responses, also noted that when she complained to the head cook at the Weinstein Passport Dining Hall, he dismissed her objections and said employees who planned the menu were black.

NYU President Andrew Hamilton said in a statement: "We were shocked to learn of the drink and food choices that our food service provider — Aramark — offered at the Weinstein dining hall as part of Black History Month. It was inexcusably insensitive."

The New York Times reported Thursday that Aramack also apologized and said its NYU employees "acted independently" and have been fired.

"We are extremely disappointed by this regrettable situation and apologize to the entire N.Y.U. community and communities everywhere for their insensitive and offensive actions," the food server said in a statement.

NYU’s College of Arts & Science Dean Gene Jarrett told The Washington Square News: I am pleased to see that there has been a prompt effort to investigate the regrettable circumstances, but also to develop a long-term strategy to ensure that the insensitive offense does not happen again."
