Texas Rep. Stockman Calls for Lerner's Arrest

Friday, 11 July 2014 09:16 AM EDT

Texas Rep. Steve Stockman has filed a resolution calling for the arrest of former Internal Revenue Service director Lois Lerner on charges of contempt of Congress.

Lerner, who was in charge of the agency’s exempt organizations department, has refused to testify at congressional hearings on accusations that she directed IRS officials to target conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.

Stockman, who was soundly beaten by Texas Sen. John Cornyn in a GOP Senate primary in March, said that he had brought a resolution in Congress directing the House sergeant-at-arms to arrest Lerner because Attorney General Eric Holder has not taken any action against her.

"Asking the Justice Department to prosecute Lois Lerner for admittedly illegal activity is a joke," Stockman said in a statement. "The Obama administration will not prosecute the Obama administration. How much longer will the House allow itself to be mocked? It is up to this House to uphold the rule of law."

Stockman, who is not running for re-election, is the first lawmaker to call for Lerner’s arrest.

In his resolution, Stockman said that Lerner’s refusal to comply with a subpoena from the Oversight and Government Reform Committee is obstructing Congress "in the lawful exercise of its constitutionally mandated legislative powers."

Lerner has also come under fire from Congress after she revealed that two years of her IRS emails around the time of the conservative targeting had gone missing.
