Democrat, GOP Senators Demand Apology to Sen. Stevens' Family

A bipartisan group of senators has demanded that the Justice Department apologize to the family of the late Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, and fire the attorneys accused of withholding evidence that played a role in his criminal conviction, The Hill reports.

The senators include Utah Republican Orrin Hatch, California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, Texas Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy, and Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley. They lambasted the Justice Department’s prosecution of Stevens in interviews with The Hill.

Hatch said prosecutors’ failure to turn over key evidence was “the lowest” level of law. “In this case, one of the most basic principles of law was ignored,” he said. “That was exculpatory evidence that would have cleared Stevens that should have said to them, ‘This man should never have been indicted to begin with.’ ”
