Stephen King has apologized for a snarky crack he made about Wednesday's deadly train wreck in Virginia.

After an Amtrak train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress to a legislative retreat in West Virginia crashed into a vehicle carrying refuse, King tweeted:

The bestselling horror writer quickly got his head handed to him by Twitter followers who informed him that the driver of the truck was killed in the accident and others were injured.

King then tweeted:

Later, after giving his response more thought, the author of "Carrie," "The Dead Zone" and "The Stand" fired off a full-fledged mea culpa.

He tweeted:

King, who lives in Maine, regularly comments on political issues and has some 4.53 million followers on Twitter.
