ESPN's Smith: Every Black Person Should Vote GOP at Least Once

By    |   Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 04:58 PM

ESPN's "First Take" commentator Stephen A. Smith told a crowd at Vanderbilt University that his dream is that every black person vote Republican at least once so the black community can see its issues addressed.

"What I dream is that for one election, just one, every black person in America vote Republican," Smith said Tuesday while speaking at Vanderbilt University's Impact Symposium during a presentation titled "How You See It: Perceptions of (In)Equality," Breitbart is reporting.

"Because from what I've read, and I'm open to correction, but from what I've read, Barry Goldwater is going against [former President] Lyndon B. Johnson. [Goldwater's] your Republican candidate. He is completely against the civil rights movement. Lyndon B. Johnson was in favor of it," he explained.

"What happens is, he wins office, Barry Goldwater loses office, but there was a Senate, a Republican Senate, that pushed the votes to the president's desk. It was the Democrats who were against civil rights legislation," he said. "So, because President Lyndon B. Johnson was a Democrat, black America assumed the Democrats were for it."

Smith went on to say that "black folks in America are telling one party, 'We don't give a damn about you.' They're telling the other party, 'You've got our vote.'

"Therefore, you have labeled yourself 'disenfranchised' because one party knows they've got you under their thumb. The other party knows they'll never get you, and nobody comes to address your interests," he added.

According to Smith, those in the black community put more thought into buying a house, car, or clothes.

"We don't do that with politics, and then we blame white America for our disenfranchisement," he explained.

"All we have to do is upset the apple cart by not doing what's predictable, and it will force everybody to pay attention to us because the Democrats will be scared of losing our vote and the Republicans will marvel at the opportunity to have a share of the black vote," he contends.

"All of a sudden, everybody will cater to our needs."

Smith identifies himself as an independent and has made similar comments in the past.

In December 2013, he said that "black conservatives are considered pariahs and are ostracized in our communities, and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever," the Right Scoop reported.

The ESPN host described it as a problem that those in the black community think "that everybody is supposed to be identical to one another and we can't display or exercise any kind of versatility or range in our thinking. It's a problem that we have to deal with."
