President Donald Trump tweet-slammed retired four-star Gen. Stanley McChrystal on Tuesday, putting his military rank in quote marks and saying he got "fired like a dog" by former President Barack Obama.
"'General' McChrystal got fired like a dog by Obama," the president tweeted in a comment tacked on to a retweet of a news story shared by conservative commentator Laura Ingraham. "Last assignment a total bust. Known for big, dumb mouth. Hillary lover!"
Ingraham had shared an item from the website Lifezette, which maintained the media did not like McChrystal until he began bashing Trump.
The conservative website took McChrystal to task for comments he had made in a weekend interview with ABC, during which he called the president immoral and untruthful and criticized many of his decisions, including on pulling troops out of Syria.
Back in 2010, Obama fired McChrystal as his top war commander in Afghanistan, replacing him with then-Gen. David Petraeus after McChrystal and his staff had made comments in a Rolling Stone interview criticizing administration officials.
According to a report in The New York Times, Obama denied he replaced McChrystal because of the interview, but instead because he was seeking "unity of effort" where the ongoing war in Afghanistan was concerned.
