The Space Force championed by President Donald Trump will likely live as a branch of the Air Force, according to a new report.

Defense News obtained a draft copy of legislation that suggested the nation's next military force would start as a piece of the Air Force. Over time, the Space Force could eventually be separated as its own branch of the military.

"There is established a United States Space Force as an armed force within the Department of the Air Force," the 2020 budget draft reads.

Defense News reported things could change since it is only a draft, but sources told the outlet that officials at the Department of Defense agree with the language.

An undersecretary of the Air Force for the Space Force would lead the military arm. It would be represented by a chief of staff on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Trump has pushed for the formation of a Space Force throughout the year. He recently signed an order to create a Space Command within the Department of Defense, but that is separate from the Space Force proposal.

Some lawmakers, including Republicans, have expressed doubt over whether the Space Force is really needed. Senate Armed Services Committee chairman James Inhofe, R-Okla., said last week he has not included the Space Force on his committee's list of priorities for 2019.

"It wasn't on my list, because I don't think we need it," Inhofe said. "I have time and time again, ever since this subject came up, I've said there are two things you have to answer. One is, is it going to do a better job than we're doing today? And then two, it's going to cost more — how much more money is it going to cost?"
