Volunteers Flood Tornado-tossed Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Saturday, 07 May 2011 06:07 PM EDT

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Thousands of volunteers headed to the University of Alabama with chainsaws, wrecking bars and food to tornado victims.

So many people came to volunteer Saturday that it caused traffic jams, reminiscent of a fall football weekend. Many groups have had time since the storms struck April 27 to organize trips, and the turnout appeared far heavier than the first weekend after the twisters.

Many volunteers wore Crimson Tide football gear, but Debra Wilson came more than 80 miles to help in an orange Auburn T-shirt.

Wilson says team allegiances don't matter at a time like this.

Christian organizations including the Salvation Army and Samaritan's Purse set up operations to coordinate volunteers, along with numerous churches. Other people simply drove through hard-hit neighborhoods and got out where they saw a need.
