Atheists are calling on the Southern Poverty Law Center to remove two atheist authors who are critical of radical Islam from a list of "anti-Muslim extremists."

In the Change.org petition, the creator said that by putting "liberal reformists and human rights activists" on the list, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) "has effectively chosen to silence and ignore many very important voices from whole groups of marginalized people, and in doing so, are inadvertently accepting the most hardline and fundamentalist interpretations of Islam which chooses to remain divorced from liberal and humanitarian values."

The authors the petition references are Maajid Nawaz and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Nawaz was a recruiter for the radical Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir and now is with the Quilliam Foundation, a think tank that focuses on anti-extremism. Ali is an ex-Muslim atheist and an advocate for women's rights in the Muslim world.

By putting the authors on the list, the SPLC is fulfilling radical Islamist goals, list creator Ahnaf Kalam said.

"While on the surface, it may seem like a well-intentioned and sympathetic gesture as to shield Muslim communities from uncomfortable truths to which they may take offense, but in actuality, is doing exactly what the Islamists want to happen."

The petition has a goal of 7,500 supporters and has around 7,100 so far.

The SPLC includes some Christian conservatives on its list, according to The Christian Post

Nawaz told The Daily Beast that he is a "liberal, reform Muslim."

"I have survived violent neo-Nazi racism and served as a former War on Terror political prisoner in Egypt, witnessing torture," he said. "Meanwhile, from the comforts of sweet Alabama comes this edict that liberal Muslims working to throw open a conversation around reforming Islam today are somehow to be deemed 'anti-Muslim extremists.'"

An opinion column in The Wall Street Journal slammed the SPLC, saying the SPLC claims that criticizing Islamism is the same as hating Muslims.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is headquartered in Montgomery, Ala. The group was founded in 1971 "to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all," according to the group's site.
